"Ragtime" was a name given to an early type of jazz, particularly associated with piano playing, with characteristic syncopations; e.g. 'Maple Leaf Rag' (Joplin). In vogue c.1890-1920, and revived in the 1970's.
Scott Joplin (1868-1917) an American composer and pianist whose ragtime compositions for piano had a revived vogue in the 1970's; he also composed operas 'A Guest of Honour' (lost), and 'Treemonisha' which was not staged until 1972.
