Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), German composer born in Bonn; son and grandson of musicians. He published a piano piece at the age of 12, and worked shortly afterwards as pianist, organist, viola-player.
Beethoven went to Vienna in 1792 to study with Haydn, but did not stay with him, and he remained in Vienna and died there. He had many love affairs but never married. He was brought up as a Roman Catholic but came to hold unorthodox deistical views.
From 1801 he developed deafness, becoming totally deaf by about 1824.
